Parasites, diseases and pests

No matter how experienced you are, all the beekeeping management skills in the world will not do you any good if you fail to prevent and control pests and diseases.

In this chapter we outline diseases affecting brood or developing bees, diseases that affect adult bees, and parasitic mites. We also cover the most common beekeeping pests and other causes of bee deaths.

The more scientists study bee parasites and diseases, the more it seems that honey bee colonies can be affected by a complex interaction between parasites, viruses and pesticides. Colony loss, particularly on a large scale, often cannot be explained by looking at one agent only, and is probably caused by a particularly virulent combination of parasites and pathogens.
